Melbourne

Well we finally managed to get out of Adelaide for a few days. On Thursday night Adam and I flew out to Melbourne. I had been warned that Melbourne weather was usually a little worse than Adelaide, but I can't say it was really that bad all things considered.

On Friday we spent the day shopping. I reckon we got in at least 6 hours. I loved it, Adam didn't. Especially, when after trekking over most of the Melbourne CBD I ended up spending most of my money about 20 metres from the hotel. Adam really doesn't get the idea of leisure shopping, I think it's a genetic thing. This is what 6 hours of shopping does to Adam:
While we were out and about we stopped at the Rialto 360 viewing deck. We assume (we didn't bother reading the signs) that the Rialto is one of the tallest buildings in Melbourne and has a fantastic viewing area on the 55th floor. It gave us some pretty spectacular views of the city.
I wasn't sure if you could take a picture through the high powered binoculars, apparently you can!

On Friday night we headed down to Southbank for a walk and to grab some dinner. Southbank has the huge Crown Entertainment Complex and dozens of restaurants to choose from.

On Saturday morning we took a wonder over to the MCG as, for some reason, Adam gets very excited about just looking at it. We didn't even go inside. For those who care the MCG holds something like 90,000 people.

The view from the MCG back towards Melbourne.

On Saturday afternoon, because he put up with all the shopping went to the Telstra Dome to watch the Crows beat Essendon. The closed roof kept the rain off, which made me happy and being allowed to take beer back to your seat made Adam happy.

On Saturday night we went up to Lygon Street for a nice Italian meal. Lygon Street is the place in Melbourne for Italian restaurants and also appeared heavily in Underbelly. For those not families with Australian TV shows Underbelly was a big success this year and was all about the criminal underworld in Melbourne. It was based on the true story of the drugs and murders that occurred in Melbourne in the 90's.

After Lygon Street we went back to the Crown on Southbank to see the fire towers and also to try the pokies (bandits). Can't say I really get it. At least I'll never be a problem gambler.

I knew we were doing something on Sunday, I just didn't know what until the day. Adam surprised me on Sunday with tickets to Wicked for my birthday. It was fantastic, though Adam's review was "too much singing". You can't please everyone!

Ok Mum.

CBD - Central Business District, basically the town centre.

MCG - Melbourne Cricket Ground (also used for football).
